Fishing Cozumel, Mexico part 1

In practically all of my vacations there has to be fishing at some point during my stay at a foreign country.  If you have ever been to Mexico you would know that it is home to one of the world's best saltwater fisheries.  I was fortunate enough to experience just that.

I was fishing on a private charter boat that was managed by three friends or amigos as it is called in Spanish.  These crew members were experienced fishermen that had been fishing for over 30 years.  With their expertise I managed to gabbing my very first and personal best blackfin tuna, groupers of various assortment, grunts, and triggerfish.

The morning started off with a beautiful sunrise at around 6 o'clock.  The deck boss had set me up with some trolling feathers in a chartreuse and purple color, and in addition we were trolling with some minnow shape crankbaits.  The charter was only four hours and for the first two hours of the trip we trolled for a single fish which happened to be my blackfin tuna.  After that we settle for bottom fishing for troopers and other delicious bottom fish.

All in all, the fishing trip was quite enjoyable and at $300 USD it wasn't too shabby.  My only complaint was that we didn't catch quite as many fish more fish as long as we should have.

Enjoy the video.

Light RockFish: Porta potty Sand Bass

7/30/13

Sand Bass, commonly referred to as Turd Rollers for their infamous spinning fighting characteristic.  Oh, and they crap at the same time when being reeled in.  lol

This was a very comical catch for me!

Belvedere Park Lake fishing

I can't quite remember when I caught this Redear, but I want to say that it was at least 4 years ago.  There is some micro sized panfish in this park lake, but if are planning to fish the park I'd steer right of it.  The only times where there are "catchable" fish is right after a trout stock during the colder months and catfish stock in the warmer months.

Southern California "Golden Trout"

12/11/13

Okay.  Before you flame me alive for the title, please know that this "Golden Trout" is a joke among me and my buddies.  Did some trout fishing on this day.  Trout fishing up the Southern California mountains are quite unique as the fish aren't the largest, the terrain isn't the most beautiful, and the area is definitely not the most clean.  BUT!  What makes it such a lovely thing to do is the convenience of driving a mere 30min to a nearby trout stream, enjoying the the water and scenery, and catching a few beautiful trout for some pictures.

Neko Rig modifications

Have you ever wondered how you can get more mileage out of your worms when fishing a Neko Rig?  If you have then check this out.  It'll save you a few bucks, I promise.

Legg Lake Bass fishing

8/4/14

I'm not a professional angler but just like any other angler I strive to improve myself with each outing.  The technique of choice for this day was an ultralight set-up using 4lb mono.  I was throwing a worm on a dropshot for a good hour before beating the skunk and scrapping up a nice little 25cm bass for the day.

Huntington Harbor Halibut fishing

11/16/13

A blast from the past.

I was fishing Huntington Harbor in my float tube on this day.  The winds were pushing 5kts+, current was strong, and the tide was LOW!  Horrible conditions if you ask me.

In the bay a cunning angler focuses on structure for his quarry as most fish are located around structure for security and food.  On this day it was a little different for me.  I did the usual by targeting dock pilings for NADA.  Feeling desperate, I turned my sights to other fish species in the bay switching from lures to live bait.  Towards the end of my trip I made a long cast into the middle of fast running channel.  I slowly retrieved my Big Hammer swimbait back my tube using a slow retrieve and BAM!  I got a nice hit!  After several minutes of fighting this fish ,and few flops with attempting to sink a lip gripper into its mouth, I landed this beast!

It was released to fight another day.

Fishing Newport Harbor (Float tubing)

8/23/14

Hello there.  I figure this is my first actual angling post.  Although this is an older post a post chocked full of pictures and a video is better than nothing right?

As an angler based in Southern California there are numerous angling opportunities.  Float tube fishing in the salt is one of them.

The fish you see here is called a Spotted Bay Bass.  It does not grow very large, about 6lbs at the most.  It can be caught on a variety of lures and presentations with swimbaits being the most commonly used lure.  On this day I caught the majority of mine on plastic creature baits, spinnerbait, and crankbaits.

Enjoy the video and pictures.
